The red dragon, national symbol of my home country Wales in the United Kingdom. I am currently writing my dissertation on the history of the Welsh dragon and its origins. This is an illustration that will accompany my paper; perhaps I will even use it as the cover image?
I love the "triptych" effect this has, with the light sky above the red dragon above the dark landscape. The colors contrast really well even with the simple palette, both within the background itself and between the dragon and the background. I also love the lighting effects here.
The only thing about this piece that doesn't sit perfectly with me is some of the coloring technique, most noticeably on the dragon's wings but also a bit on the mountainsides and treetops. I feel like that with all the detailing and depth in the rest of the image, the winding and hasty brushstrokes of color don't measure up. There are also some areas where the color seems to "go outside of the lines".
Still, even if I can see those strokes, the mixing of colors is amazing, and I love seeing all the details on the dragon like its scales, crest, and feet/hands! I love your dragons. =-)
